Catholic Baton Rouge clinches 4-5A Title after suspenseful win over the Zachary Broncos

Thursday night would be full of hype, videos, smoke and explosions, as the Zachary Broncos would host the Catholic High Bears in a 4-5A District Championship Game.

After the smoke cleared and the minutes ticked off the clock the Catholic High Baton Rouge Bears had clinched the 4-5A District Championship after a 40 yard field game with 14 seconds left in the game by Senior Kicker Landon Carter, to put the Bears ahead 24-21.

Down 21-7 in the third quarter the Catholic Bears mounted offensive attacks and defensive stops that would create 17 unanswered points to propel them to a 24-21 Final.

The Catholic-B.R. Bears move to 9-1 and 5-0 in District, on the season.  The look to have a first round bye in the playoffs.

Zachary Broncos move to 7-2 and 4-1 in District, on the year.  They look to host in the first round of the playoffs.

Alabama commit Eli Holstein completed 12 of 16 passes for 197 yards and one touchdown.  He also rushed for 35 yards.  His efforts in the last minutes of the game came up just short of the red zone and a potential chance for a winning score or tying field goal.

LSU Commit and Catholic High’s record setting wide receiver, Shelton Sampson had three catches for 18 yards and a touchdown on the night.  Senior Corner Cody Smith, Zachary Broncos, covered Sampson most of the night.

Pivotal point late in the game was when Holstein was sacked by Blair Rousseau (led the team with tackles on the night with 6) and Sophomore R. J. Fleming forcing the Broncos to punt with 1:56 left in the game.  The punt would only travel 14 yards and set Catholic up at the Broncos 29 yard line.  This led to Landon Carter’s 40 yard field goal try with 14 seconds left that gave the Bears the lead, 24-21.

Sophomore running back, Ryland Parker led the way on the ground for the Bears with 17 carries for 89 yards and 1 touchdown.  Senior running back, Barry Remo was a force running with the ball and pounding on the Broncos defense all night.  He ended the night with 14 carries and a hard fought 56 yards on the ground. Junior wide receiver, Bradley Wright led the receiving core with 3 receptions for 75 yards and 1 touchdown.

Senior running back Camren Stewart led the rushing attack for the Broncos.  Stewart carried the ball 14 times for 46 yards and a touchdown.  The receiving core for the Broncos was active all night.  Jalen Wright had 3 reception for 79 yards, Tyson George had 3 receptions for 64 yards, and Tylon Williams caught 2 passes for 61 yards, a touchdown, as well as, 28 yards rushing and a touchdown.
