Game Of The Week – The Spartans and Wildcats Clash on the Gridiron in Walker

It was like a set of runaway freight trains between the two running backs from East Ascension o Thursday night as the East Ascension Spartans took on the Walker Wildcats.  The duo of Walter Samuel and Jacorey Johnson each rushed for over 100 yards and 4 of the Spartans touchdowns on the night for the Spartans.

Samuel’s feisty and physical running style was hard for Walker to stop as the junior running back ran for 162 yards (133 in the first half) of 17 carries and 2 touchdowns.

Add a stingy defense who dominated the line of scrimmage for the Spartans and you have a perfect combination to take the 48-28 win over the Walker Wildcats.

East Ascension had 308 yards rushing on 41 carries and Walker ran 26 times for 280 yards on the night.

Walker’s starting quarterback, Hunter Bethel was 7 for 12 passing with 107 yards, despite not playing the second half due to injury.

Big Play Ability:

Senior linebacker, converted running back, Rionte Jones hits the hole like a steam locomotive for the first score of the night for East Ascension.  0-7 Spartans.

Hunter Bethel airs one to Noah Cecil, who bumbles the pass but maintains good focus to secure the ball, who takes it 77 yards for a Wildcat touchdown to tie the score up 7 all.

East Ascension’s quarterback Troy Dunn used both his legs and his strong arm to create scoring opportunities for the Spartans. Dunn completed his night with 6 for 10 passing for 118 yards and 2 TDs, 2 carries for 12 yards and a touchdown.

Scoring Plays for East Ascension: First half Dunn rolls right, reverses field and strolls into the endzone for a 12 yard rushing touchdown.  After a Walter Samuel run for 48 yards, Dunn then tossed up a 24 yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Jacorey Mitchell, and with 9:53 left in the first half Dunn air’s out  a 29-yard pitch and catch to a wide open Allen Starks to bring the score to 21-7 Spartans.

Up and Coming Prospect: Walker’s junior wide receiver Ja’Cory Thomas will be one to watch for the rest of the season and up coming spring/camp season.  The 6’3″ 180lb junior is explosive and looks to get maximum yards every time he touches the ball.  Thomas scored on a option/reverse going 69 yards for a touchdown for the Wildcats in the first half.

Second half highlight for the Wildcats: Warren Young, junior wide receiver for Walker who played quarterback in the second half due to Bethel’s injury, split the tackles finding an open seam and goes 95 yards for a touchdown.

Notable player for the Walker Wildcats: Senior running back Rayshawn Simmons showed his physical running style as he made the most of his opportunities to move the ball for the Wildcats.  A very physical force with the ball Simmons picked up two big first down in the second half to lead Walker to a touchdown score.
