Game of the Week: 76th meeting of the Amite River Rivalry
The 76th meeting of the Amite River Rivalry brought together two of the top 5A areas teams.
When the night ended the Central Wildcats would retain the trophy, taking this year’s win over the Denham Springs Yellowjackets 41-20.
Central would take the lead early with a 26 yard field goal, 0-3 in the first quarter, by kicker Nathan Hunter .
The Yellowjacket offense would quickly return the favor on their first offensive series when Denham Spring’s would mount a 63 yard drive that ended with quarterback Devin Kinchen taking the ball off the right side for a 35 yard scamper to the endzone. Denham would take the lead 7-3.
From that point on the Wildcats would go on an offensive power play and defensive strong arm to score 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to lead at the half 24-7. The Wildcats would then add a rushing touchdown by Max Gassiott (31-7 16 seconds left in the 3rd) and a pick 6 return for a score by Davonta Sanders (38-7 11:47 left in game).
Central Wildcat quarterback Max Gassiott would account for 135 yards of passing offense (15 of 24 passing, 1 interception) and rushing for 64 yards (10 carries), with 3 touchdowns.
Central Wildcat running back Tristan Rose accounted for 118 yards on 19 carries and one touchdown.
The Wildcat defensive, lead by Jayden Garnett (sack), John Robinson (sack), Lane Billings (TFL), Davonta Sanders (pick 6 for touchdown) and freshman Harlem Lindsey (interception), accounted for four turnovers and would hold the Yellowjackets to less than 200 yards of offense.
Denham Spring’s Sophomore quarterback, Devin Kinchen would complete 6 of 11 passing for 25 yards, with two interceptions.
Next Up: The Wildcats host John Ehret on Friday, September 18 for Homecoming. The Patriots go into the battle with a record of 0-2.
